Mark's Musings: 07-31-2008 : The Tournament ... er ... GalactiCon Master!

As you'll remember, after GalactiCon last year, I conducted some interviews with some of the key players in the current Filsinger Games/Champions of the Galaxy pantheon. This year was no different, as I spoke with four of the folks now involved in some way, shape, or form with the COTG product. First up will be the creator of aCe star Totalis, the Tournament Master, or should I say, the GalactiCon Master, Todd Joerchel. Within the confines of Fed HQ after all the convention activities were over on Sunday, I sat down with him and asked him the questions that needed to be asked of a guy who runs things behind the scenes for Filsinger Games (especially the question of what Tom is like as a boss!).

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 024: Live from GalactiCon!

For the first time ever, at GalactiCon '08, the Zone of Lawlessness went live in front of an audience of freaks, mutants, degenerates, and even a few people who cheat at poker. The energetic crowd was treated to the patented Lawless sense of humor, but the real star of the show was the GWFZ's own Johnny Rocket! Johnny came by to talk to Trent about the developmental league for the GWF, some of the personalities, his role in the fed, and where he sees some of the Z's stars in the future.

But that's not all! Toward the end of the show, former Z star Totalis (the Tournament Master) makes his appearance to denigrate the league he left for All Centra Entertainment, and that doesn't sit too well with some of the Z's current "headliners" (pun intended). More than one member of the Z who was on hand at the Con came out to make the end of the show, shall we say, "Sledgendary"!

Since we're coming up on the 19th edition of the annual Champions of the Galaxy/Legends of Wrestling convention in Jamestown, New York, on July 12, it's time to talk about what will be happening there this year. Specifically, I want your ideas on some of the recordings that will be going on, both for this site and for COTG Online. Obviously, auditions for voices for the "original 24" characters from the 2087 set will be done, as previously announced, but I've also got some other ideas for audio to create with the help of fellow fans and promoters. Contained in this Mark's Musings are those ideas, which I solicit your feedback on. They may not all happen due to time constraints, but I'm just trying to get an idea of which ones people place a higher priority on so that we can plan accordingly. The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 023 : Raze's Power Play

This time, no interruptions from Nes Kincade, or anyone else, for that matter. Just Trent beginning with a (for him, rare) message of apology for his outbursts before getting into the news of the day. The main topic for discussion is the alleged moves by Raze to start taking over the True Way commune from the influence of his former manager and mentor, Talisman. We know that he and Absalom appear to have gotten on the same page about it all lately, but is there more in store from the former panic attack victim? And if so, what are Talisman and T.K.'s likely responses going to be?

There's also some more discussion about the possible reformation of the team format in the POW and who might be the best candidate to benefit from such a shift, as well as some speculation on what Viggo's possible return might mean for the Thayne/Ahnu feud (already about the hottest in the POW). Plus, to counteract the negative vibes he gave off last time, there's a Lawless Seal of ApprovalÂ to bestow on a worthy competitor. The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 021 : The Heavyweights of MMA

Is this fighter the top heavyweight mixed-martial arts competitor in the POW? Nobody will dispute that the mat technician Cypher deserves a place in the elite of the division, but Trent Lawless will have the final say on whether his skills on the ground earn him the top spot in this, the final countdown of the MMA divisions in the federation. You can probably guess who will be joining him up in the stratosphere, but who has what it takes to get the Lawless imprimatur of the best MMA heavyweight in the galaxy? Put on your thinking caps and see if you can divine the Lawless Way (not to be confused with the True Way, naturally).

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 020 : The Cruiserweights of MMA

For this installment, we've got the 14 cruiserweights of the POW ranked by Mr. Lawless himself in order of ascending proficiency, with perhaps Pendekar in the top spot? Or will it be his partner Stigma? Or Thayne, Zed Marlowe, Euritar? Lots of possibilities for this one, as the cruiserweight division is potentially the most talent-filled of any we have in the POW. We've also got fan mail (believe it or not) speculating about who Mike Fortune's current employer in his feud against Hanuman might be. While Trent thinks the fan might be onto something, he's got some Lawless-like twists of his own to put some spin on it all, so that by the end you won't know what to think!

You'll listen to his take on the super heavyweights, the biggest of the big men, the nine fellows (human, animal, and mixture) who populate that grouping. And what does he have to say about the two super heavyweights who commandeered his studio and manhandled Marv â Silas and Gordo? You might be hearing a whip sound effect somewhere in this particular rant!

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 018 : The Women of MMA

Now that we're in the POW era, we're seeing a different side to the competitors we know and cheer (and jeer). We're seeing how they handle a different type of combat - mixed martial arts. Revisiting his personal rankings concept that he started some time ago, Trent will use the next few shows to break down his lists of who are the best and worst in each of the POWs four divisions, starting this time with the women. Where does Rhiannon fit in on that list? Or the other former OFC ladies? He's got his opinions, and while they're not guaranteed to be right, he'd like you to think they are!

Vidtek weighs in during the middle segment of the show with his thoughts on the changeover from CPC to POW (with some surprising things to say about his former manager and teammates!), and then he decides he has a Bitchslap of his own to deliver to someone in the GWF! The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 017 : P.O. Freakin' W.!

Little did you know that with Show 016, you were hearing your final Zone of Lawlessness under the banner of the Colby-Pelf Corporation (CPC). Now, with the buyout of the league by Faustus Grael, the federation has revived the name from the mid-21st century of Pleiades Outlaw Wrestling (P.O.W.), and all the rebel attitude that entails! And perhaps surprisingly, the new face of the league is the same as the old one was: that of Jack Hood, who not only has taken back the reins of the commissionership from the departed Tiberius Prell, but says he's going to occasionally step back in the ring and battle it out with whoever thinks they're tough enough! Trent's got some thoughts about the changeover and about Jack Hood himself, and you might be interested to know...they're not 100% positive.

Trent also tells what he knows of some further background to the saga of Saboteur and Shylock and how the devious one was thwarted in his dramatic return to the fed at Countdown to Destruction. When did Shylock and Splatter know what they knew, and why did they take the course that they did? Maybe not everything is answered by the end of the segment, but at least you'll know what Trent knows. And who gets the Lawless Seal of ApprovalÂ this time? (Hint: It's a pretty blatant attempt at sucking up, but at least Trent seems to realize that.)

"The Mole" : HUGE NEWS for CPC Fans!

He/she has recorded part of a conversation between Magnus Colby and Pleiades Cluster Center owner and promoter Faustus Grael (pictured here) that is without a doubt shocking! In addition, another recording was later made remotely from an unknown place between Grael and an unidentified person, which you'll also hear here.

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 013 : Vidtek Fooled Me!

It's time for lucky show #13, Zone fans, and Trent has a bit of a chip on his shoulder this time. Seems that his "good friend" Vidtek led him down a path of deception last time they spoke when he indicated he wasn't too keen on Sultana's chances against Mother Superior. Mark's Musings: 07-14-2007 â Throwing Some Toasters with Grant Baciocco

At GalactiCon '07, attendees were treated to a first in convention history â a concert by not just a comedy musician, but a comedy musician who plays Champions of the Galaxy and has written songs based specifically on GWF characters. Grant Baciocco is the Everyman of Throwing Toasters, the guy who comes up with the music and the words, and often the only person playing and singing them. He's just released Songs in the Key of GWF (available at www.filsingergames.com/home.htm), a must-have for any fan of the game who also enjoys laughing about something that the general public has no clue about. This interview was conducted on the second day of the convention, and in it, Grant talks about his inspirations, what it's like to turn a character into a song, and his playing of the game over the years. Listen, learn, and (if you haven't already), go buy every Throwing Toasters CD you can get your hands on. Just don't be surprised if you do indeed laugh your a** off. Consider yourself warned!

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 012 : The Mystery of Mother Superior

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 011 : Cordanus?!? NOOOOOO!!!

Well, if you've been looking hard at Mensar's success lately, you may also be wondering if he really has been doing it on his own, as he claims he has. Trent's sources say, maybe not! In this installment of Mark's Musings, I wanted to talk a bit about my own creative process as I write the sets for the CPC federation of Filsinger Games' Champions of the Galaxy, with specific instances drawn from the most recent installment, Cataclysm 2121. While I may not be quite at the level of a Dark Menace of the Universe as far as creativity goes (I'm far too much of a planner for that), I hope this will answer some questions that game fans have had in the past about what thoughts go through my head as I tell the stories of these characters. I know that my approach is different in many ways from Tom's, so if you're interested, this will shed some light on how I go about it. (Now you can stop asking me questions about it at GalactiCon!)

That's right. Our eighth show and we're finally getting around to reporting some stuff from that other league, the GWF. And we've got the perfect reporter to do it. Who, you ask? You think we're gonna tell you without you listening? Remember who you're dealing with here!

Also, there's an injury report on one half of the Punks, no longer the CPC tag team champs now that Darwin's Legacy has dethroned them. Taurine suffered a beatdown at the hands of Hadrian in their title loss, and wait till you hear how it happened! The Punks have revenge on their minds, and there's no doubt they're the most popular duo in the CPC right now.

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 007 : Puma Rising ... or Not?

All right, no more Italian wannabes on this program. Back to the news!

Trent's got a few issues on his mind, foremost of which is the rumor he's hearing about recently-departed AniMan and Dr. Barnabas' "greatest experiment" Puma, who is reportedly being drilled (and probably drugged) to get him into fighting shape for a return to the CPC by 2122 or maybe even before. But if he does come back, how will Dr. B get past Prodigy's rule barring him from managing more than two wrestlers? And what might Gila try to do in the meantime to get him back? There's also an update on the war in Alpha Lyrae, with the insurgency of the northern people making a cause cÃlÃbre out of Thayne's family. What will the Jardiil response be? We'll also catch up with a former CPC wrestler in Trent's own version of "Where Are They Now?" (details inside), and the former Duck Boy gets himself a well-deserved Bitchslap.

Mark's Musings: 02-11-2007 â COTG : In Stereophonic Sound?

It seems that there's been some talk lately (partially started by me) that the time may be right for some sort of Champions of the Galaxy audio project, complete with game fans providing the voices, music, and script for it. I've devoted the second installment of my intermittent Musings to this topic, one that I've considered on and off for the greater part of two decades of playing now. Is this a feasible project? How would we pull it off? Who would be involved? And perhaps most importantly, when in the COTG timeline should such a project take place â 2087? 2074? 2119? 2122? Or some other moment?

If you've got about half an hour to spare, and can put up with me ad libbing my way through most of this, then please help me figure this all out!

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 006 : Lawless vs. Jesterelli!

At the risk of incurring the wrath of a certain ring announcer, llllllllllllet's get ready to ... rumble? Well, we're not sure if the confrontation between Trent Lawless and Franco Jesterelli can exactly be described as a rumble, but it sure is entertaining! Trent thinks he's prepared to drive the ersatz Italian into the ground with his brand of verbal punishment, but one should never underestimate the power of a good laugh, and the surprise factor of the person providing it. (We'll give you a hint: He's pictured here.) Who wins this meeting of the minds? Does Trent live up to his self-billed rhetorical prowess? Can we understand a word Franco says? The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 005 : Trent Gets Called Out!

Well, you knew it had to happen eventually. Somebody finally got peeved enough at Trent's fuming on the ZoL to demand to be included on the show, and while he's not a guest this time, you can bet sparks will fly when Franco Jesterelli joins Trent next time around. Wait till you hear the war of words behind this feud!

Also, Trent follows up on the top 10 singles competitors in the CPC from last time with the top 5 tag teams. Who grabs the top spot? Current champs the Punks? Perennial faves Darwin's Legacy? Someone else? Maybe he'll surprise you. But he'll definitely give you a laugh or two along the way.

Mark's Musings: 12-04-2006 â 20 Years of COTG

On December 4, 1986, I was in the eighth grade and had just received a package in the mail from Filsinger Games, a package that contained the introductory set of 24 cards and a handbook for the GWF and Champions of the Galaxy. On December 4, 2006, 20 years and about a million cards later, I'm still rolling the dice and setting up matches in not just the GWF, but also the CPC and aCe federations, as well. It's been a long strange trip from the days of Club Galactica (see the picture of me at age 15 here â and then promptly forget you ever saw it!), but I've got a lot of memories over those two decades, some of which I've chosen to share here, along with the results from my 20th anniversary supercard, fresh off the presses!

Thanks to Tom Filsinger for making me a willing slave these past 20 years, and to all the friends I've made along the way. Here's to another 20 and more!

The Zone of Lawlessness â Show 003 : 2121 Kicks Off!

Countdown to Destruction is history, and what a history-making night it was! Trent breaks down the reasons he's pumped for the Mensar/Euritar feud that's staring us in the face from the top of the card, plus he tries to figure out who Shylock has to worry about among the friends and foes around him. He also wants to know who else you think might be plotting with Saboteur to bring the ex-OFCer down. Gunnar has now staked his position against Zed Marlowe; has Killer Queen made the wrong decision? Trent tells you what he thinks about this could-be sleeper feud of the year. Who gets himself a Lawless Bitchslap this time? Why, Raze, that's who? (This is probably the only time you'll hear Trent talk psychiatry, so listen up good!)
